The historical view of babies represents babies as passive and helpless.

When you look at early depictions of young children they were often dressed in adult clothing and considered miniature adults.

The adult view was a waiting game until children were old enough to contribute.

At the turn of the century children as young as 7 years old were often put to work around the farm and in factories.
